Point taken 8 ways to communicate like a human infographic

Point taken 8 ways to communicate like a human infographicPoint taken 8 ways to communicate like a human infographicA colleague mentioned the fact that he received two nearly identical emails last week. Both had the exact same information, timeline and takeaways. He read through both, but when it came to remembering the point of each, one stood out mora than the other the one with a simple but extremely easy to understand infographic. While human beings cant be infographics, cutting down on conversational clutter can make people more inclined to listen to what you say. In other words, trying to keep your messaging and presentations as clear and on point as those handy dandy chart and info hybrids can make people pay more attention to you and your messaging.1. Take it easyOne of the joys of a well-designed infographic is the fact that while there may be a lot of information to digest, there arent necessarily that many words. Keep the information easy to understand and retain.2. Know y our target audienceAn image of a juicy hamburger definitely wouldnt work when pitching a group of vegans, so why take a chance on alienating the people youre trying to impress? Take a moment to figure out your audience before launching into a pitch or request. Try to tailor your request so that its personalized to the person or group on the receiving end.3. Know your statsThe strength of many infographics is the seemingly effortless presentation a lot of dense information, usually statistics. If youre going to quote specifics to strengthen an argument, make sure you know what youre talking about. Research facts, figures and statistics in advance and only use them sparingly and effectively.4. Embrace visuals when possibleWe all know that a picture is worth a thousand words, but unless you plan on walking around with a sandwich board, it can be hard to emulate an actual infographic. Instead, if youre planning on giving a pitch or informal presentation try to have at least one visual c ue or anchor for people to focus on. It will also take some of the pressure off while youre speaking.5. Keep it manageableOne of the joys of infographics is the fact that theres a lot of really juicy information contained in a single series of connected images. Wait until a full-fledged meeting to share all your most brilliant ideas, but in the initial stages stick to the most important points.6. Tweet TweetTwitter can be an interesting place to find out updates and informationmore so since users are limited to 140 characters per update. If youre struggling with a complicated idea, try to imagine how you might tweet it out and then finesse the grammar, before sharing with others.7. Add some white spaceWhen you have big ideas, you sometimes want to include all of them, even if there isnt quite room for everything. Think about the most bold and eye-catching infographic theres usually white space which allows you to absorb the main ideas instead of feeling overwhelmed by them. Try to r emember to leave blank spaces in your messaging as well, to give people the ability to simply accept and retain your ideas.8. Stay in touchOne of the biggest frustrations of our sometimes confusingly connected lives is the fact that it can feel impossible to simply and immediately connect with someone. Infographics are awesome because they tend to include only the most important way to create with their creators. The next time you meet someone new think about the way you most want to connect with them and share only that bit of contact information. People can get so bogged down with communication methods that they forget to connect.

Best Practices for the Happy Hour Interview

Best Practices for the Happy Hour InterviewBest Practices for the Happy Hour InterviewWhat to wear, what to drink and when to call it a night.Meeting for cocktails is different from meeting for coffee or over lunch. The expectation is that you will meet in the evening and the situation will be less formal than the office - but leid too informal. When you meet for cocktails, you are not going to a bar, you are not going to a club, said actress Deidre Henry, who this year appeared on television in Three Rivers, Southland and Lie To Me and will soon be seen in the feature film Beautiful Boy. You know what you are walking into on some level. It is a matter of what sort of image you want them to walk away with, and how do you want to be perceived.Dressing for the OccasionDress thoughtfully. For women, choices are greater but need to be made with care. Women do have a fine line to tread, said Kelly Dingee, a sourcing researcher and executive trainer for AIRS, an executive search firm, but I think there is enough womens wear that converts from office situations so there are plenty of selections.Obviously you shouldnt be dressed like you are going on a date. I wouldnt wear anything that I would wear out with my husband or maybe with my girlfriends if we were going out for a good time at night. I would tone it down just a little bit if it were for a job meeting. Be a little more conscious of necklines and colors. Deborah Brown-Volkman, a professional certified coach ( PCC ) and the president of a career, life and mentor coaching company, advised women to wear a dress with a jacket.Selecting a DrinkA beer? A glass of wine? A Rusty Nail? Some would probably get whatever their host gets, Dingee observed. I tend to order what I am most comfortable with, so I will almost always order a glass of wine in those situations. If there is a fairly casual crowd and most are going to order a beer, I might order a beer. My boss would probably order whiskey straight. Whatever you sele ct is part of your personality - as long as you dont overindulge.One-Drink MaximumWhenever it is a business situation, I have a one-drink rule. Two drinks is the maximum, said Dingee, who as a former recruiter once received a job-search expense report in which a candidate ordered in excess of 10 drinks at one sitting. That sends up some red flags. You want to be sociable, but you dont want to treat it like its your local frat party.Brown-Volkman said that she, too, would nurse one drink but suggested having a club soda if you decide to move onto a second drink.Actor Douglas Dickerman (who appeared on Numbers, Law Order, and on several national commercials) recently attended a benefit for a production company that included industry colleagues and networking opportunities. I had one drink at the end - because you really want to be yourself.

An HR professional needs to be adept at finding and securing the best hires, even when the job market is in the candidates favor. They must be resourceful and know how to locate talent, beyond just placing job ads. GET HELP WITH HIRING2. Conducting employee terminations or layoffsSince letting a worker go is usually an emotionally draining process, its no surprise that 26 percent of HR professionals claimed this to be the fruchtwein challenging part of their jobs. Also, the legal issues to consider can be particularly stressful for HR workers because one misstep in the termination process can lead to a time-consuming and expensive lawsuit for the company.Knowing how to conduct effective and insightful exit interviews can help identify reasons a business loses employees and lays the groundwork for a plan to help impro ve retention in the future.3. Managing benefits and perks programsHealth insurance, 401k plans, disability, paid vacation time, and a company benefits and perks program can be extensive and complex. Twenty-three percent of HR professionals felt that managing these programs was the most challenging part of the job. Often, these programs include hidden perks such as subsidized training, leaves of absence or seasonal perks such as flexible hours in the summer. Casual dress codes and birthday celebrations may elend seem complicated, but they have the potential to start an administrative snafu if not properly implemented. When HR staff members see a new employee perk being implemented, they have to look ahead to the potential impact and give it a thumbs up or thumbs down, which doesnt always cast them in the most favorable light.4. Ensuring internal and external compensation equityThe pressure is on the HR team to ensure compensation is competitive. The burden of making sure that a compan ys workers are not lured away by better salaries, impressive titles or attractive perks rests on the shoulders, at least partially, of human resources. As a result, its no surprise that 14 percent of HR professionals cited compensation equity as their top challenge.Employers are invested in improving employee retention by promoting their top performers and implementing raises, bonuses and fringe benefits. The company relies on human resources to help them do this in the most cost-effective way possible. Regularly benchmarking salaries using tools like the most recent OfficeTeam Salary Guide can give a company an edge.

Emailing Candidates Do This Before Hitting Send

Emailing Candidates Do This Before Hitting Send The spunky 25-year old with wing-tipped glasses and vintage oxfords shows off the open, collaborative and clean workspace to the potential candidate. The reclaimed wood shelving and white-board coffee tables accent the exposed industrial ceiling. The katechese is We are proud of our eclectic company culture work hard, play hard.Well done, you have created a home away from home for any millennial. But before any candidate walks through the antique, charming front door, there are three ways to present your company culture before the office tour.A whopping70 percent of American workers are not engaged in their job. What a huge opportunity for you These workers are poachable and the right direct message can lure them to your company. Whether this is via a social network like LinkedIn or an emaille, these short messages, when done tactfully, can leave an impactful stamp on the candidate.1. Use a catchy, pop-o ut subject lineWhat first impression do you want the candidate to take away from your email? The subject line is the first thing the candidate reads and thereby makes the anfangsbuchstabe judgment. With 35 percent of email recipients opening email based on the subject line alone, this collection of words can make a significant impact, positively or negatively, to the candidate.Instead of the boring, run-of-the-mill subject line i.e. Entry-Level Sales Position, Great Pay, Great Benefits why not use something that will certainly stick out in the crowded inbox? Here are a few examples that any millennial would jump to open60k, Jeans and Free Lunch at Company XYZYoure Fun and I Want You On My TeamFlex hours and the chance to perfect your top spinKeep the subject line personal and thoughtful. This is the first glimpse into your company and should reflect your values and company personality. The goal is to grab attention and transcend your brand. Dont be afraid to have a little fun2. Drop t he cookie-cutter descriptionNow that the email is opened, we step on down to the message content. Six lines of the companys mission statement plus a regurgitated job description with vanilla words and vague details equals a glazed over email Use conversational words and phrases to sound like the human you are instead of a machine. The four-paragraph in-depth KPI report can be used later, after the initial interest has spiked.Threeout of four millennials say that work-life balancedrivestheir career choices. If you are proud of something specific about your culture, share it Opening the doors (metaphorically) of your company culture will speed up the process of finding the right fit of the next employee before opening the literal doors.Cut the buzzwords and keep it real. Each candidate does not want to think they are receiving a blast from a database or a purchased list. The point of this direct message is to get them towantto visit the career landing page and reply to you to learn mor e.3. Personalize your email signatureThe last way to add that extra punch in the email is the email signature in the footer. This area continues to be overlooked.Just a little over50 percent of professionals use email signatures when they write their emails. What a missed opportunityUse creativity, colors, social links, a tagline, a quote, a pictureanything Add a call to subscribe to the unicorn of newsletters or a super-cool blog. Even a little personality goes a long way.The email signature is your chance to have the last word and leave your stamp to the message. Theconclusion the candidate forms after reading the message could be Wow, that person seems to have a great work-life balance Gee, gosh golly, I would love to work thereSo, what have we accomplished here? The candidate has taken a virtual tour of your company culture through a five-minute, 100ish word email. The subject line hooked the person the job description got him or her excited and the cool email signature poised t he candidates hovering hand to hit reply. My Challenge to YouBefore you send a candidate an email, really think about what you are saying, what subject line you use and how you sign the message. Diversify your networkMake connections beyond your own career path. Every part should have at least one friend or expert in their lives in the following areasInsurance professional Financial advisorPharmacistLawyerWebsite designer/business ownerPoliticianArtist or graphic designerRecruiterHandymanReal estate brokerWhy all these people and what makes them important? Each of the above professions cover one thing related to survival in the United States.Whether it be your money, safety, legal needs, home construction, personal health, political influence, or simply finding a place to live, having a person in each field that you trust will benefit you.If you canbedrngnis sure why today, you will find out the day you try to start a business, deal with the IRS, need to make sure your prescriptions are filled, need a job etc.5. Stay committed to educating yourselfThere is no such thing anymore as a college education and work experience being enough to advance your career. In order to earn more you have to learn more for your career growth. Why should you never stop learning?Companies do not always invest in specialized training.Plus, college degrees only represent an education that was relevant at the time you had attended school.Get your certifications. If you spot something more should be learned, act on that instinct and learn it.4. Never be afraid to relocate for a job or change itNever fear changing jobs, your career path, and relocating for new work. Are you saying move to the middle of nowhere for a job?Yes. Survival is defined as the state or fact of continuing to live or exist, typically in spite of an accident, ordeal, or difficult circumstances. If you change where you live to keep your job, especially in a global economy, you will benefit from the experience. If you want to stay put and find a new job locally, do so before the company does layoffs. Lean on your friends and family for assistance.Your career is a journey. If you choose not to relocate for your career, but career survival demands it, you are damaging your career path to success.3. Always improve and adjust your salary for inflationIf you think you are making lots of money now, please keep in mind your salary will not be worth the same for much longer. You have to prepare to negotiate up when it comes to salary. What is the big deal with inflation if I am making lots of money now?Imagine for a moment that you start a new business. Now, imagine you make $75,000/year, you are single, and live alone in a US state with a low cost of living. Now, che ck and see what $75K looks like today vs what it looked like 20 years ago.Whatever you are making now at your job, 20 years from now it will not be the same great salary you once believed was more than enough.2. Do your very best to never require government financial assistanceWhether it be financial aid or social security for disability, do your very best to never file for financial assistance from the government. There are better ways to make the little amount of money the government provides. Why not if I am entitled to financial assistance?Speaking from personal experience, the day you rely on borrowed money from the government, your career becomes dictated by rules and laws that seem to restrict you from moving forward rather than help you.Do your best to avoid dealing with them. If you must get assistance, remember that government money is not a salary. It is meant to help you temporarily, so it will not be a lot of money.Time spent proving you need assistance is better spent f inding a job with a company who understands your need for work-life balance.1. Get action-focused during your toughest career challengesWe live in a world in which everyone can discuss feelings and how everyone should be feeling. If you are going through a career challenge, do not get caught up in the trend of emphasizing feelings over actions. Become action-focused.Start improving your feelings by taking actions that lead to positive consequences.Remember this whenever you fear offending someoneWhen you focus on feeling the right way during your most difficult career times, you stop taking action in your career to improve it. Here is a step-by-step example of focusing too much on feelingsYou are laid off by your bossInstead of moving forward, you stop to analyze how everyone felt. My boss laid me off But I guess he was only thinking of the business. He must have a family, too, so I should feel more understanding. It must not have been easy for him. Still, it feels unfair that he gav e me no time to prepare for a new job. This just feels so unfair to me.The consequences of taking no action results in an unemployed person focused on rationalizing feelings, instead of actions that should have or will be taken.Try a focus on actionThis was a learning experience. I have to find a new job. What makes an action-focus a key to career survivalYou hold yourself accountable for moving forward when you focus on taking action. On the other hand, if you always hold yourself accountable for the feelings of others, you set an impossible standard for yourself. Behaving as if you can accommodate all the feelings of every person in your careerleads to paralyzing fear of taking action. No one can read minds and you should not wait for anyone to read yours. Waiting to take action is a career-killer.
